What is TRON?

Founded in 2017 by Justin Sun, TRON is a global leader among blockchain protocols, with a mission to create the infrastructure for a truly decentralized internet. TRON shares Quicknode's commitment to decentralization and has built a vast ecosystem that includes its Layer-1 blockchain, TRON Virtual Machine, TRON DAO, DAppChain sidechains, and the file-sharing service BitTorrent Chain, among others.

TRON operates on a consensus mechanism called delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS). This sets TRON apart from energy-intensive proof-of-work models like Bitcoin. DPoS is an evolved version of the proof-of-stake mechanism employed by blockchains such as Ethereum. In this system, participants vote to select which nodes, known as "super representatives," are permitted to process transactions on the network. TRON features 27 super representatives responsible for validating transactions, generating new blocks, and competing for rewards based on their positive contributions to the network. The continuous voting system allows for the replacement of any misbehaving super representatives, ensuring an ongoing, efficient, and secure operation.
