What is Data Availability?

Blockchains can scale in a monolithic or modular fashion. Those who select the modular approach, such as Ethereum L2s, can opt for a separate tool for storing transaction data. This can result in lower transaction costs and higher transaction throughput. However, there is typically a tradeoff in lower accessibility of the transaction data onchain and more centralization of the data availability service.
