Overview

AltLayer is a decentralized protocol that helps Web3 scale faster. It lets teams launch native and restaked rollups using optimistic or zero-knowledge (zk) rollup stacks. It supports rollup SDKs including OP Stack, Arbitrum Orbit, Polygon CDK, zkSync's ZKStack, and Starkware. It also works with data availability layers like Celestia, EigenLayer, and Avail.

AltLayer's core innovation is its Restaked Rollup framework. It uses EigenLayer's restaking to improve security, decentralization, and interoperability for app-specific rollups. The framework provides modular Actively Validated Services (AVSes) for decentralized verification, faster finality, and decentralized sequencing, which address key problems rollups face today.

The platform offers a no-code Rollups-as-a-Service (RaaS) launchpad. Developers and non-technical users can spin up custom rollups in minutes.

AltLayer supports two kinds of rollups. Ephemeral rollups run temporarily during demand spikes and then settle on Layer 1. Persistent rollups serve long-term apps. This flexibility lets dApp teams experiment quickly and use resources well. AltLayer also offers x402 services and EIP-8004 products for verifiable AI agents, which make AI interactions in Web3 secure and auditable.

AltLayer focuses on decentralization and modularity across the rollup stack. Its AVS components are VITAL for state verification, MACH for fast finality, and SQUAD for decentralized sequencing. Rollup operators can customize operator selection, rewards, and slashing rules. This reduces reliance on centralized sequencers and lowers the vendor lock-in risk common with other RaaS offerings.

The protocol supports many kinds of rollups, multiple virtual machines (EVM and WASM), and interoperability between them. Notable integrations include Cyber L2 (a social L2 on the Optimism Superchain), Xterio gaming L2s on Ethereum and BNB Chain, Injective's interoperable Layer 1, and Bยฒ Network's Bitcoin rollup. AltLayer has received major grants and backing from EigenLayer and Polychain Capital.

To get started, developers can read AltLayer's documentation and use the RaaS launchpad to create rollups with little coding. The platform plugs into popular rollup stacks and data availability layers, so teams can fit rollups to their app's needs. Its open, permissionless approach encourages new rollup designs and gives teams tools to build scalable, secure, decentralized Layer 2 networks for DeFi, gaming, social, and AI apps.

The Problem

Many app-specific rollups lack sufficient decentralized verification and fast finality, relying on centralized sequencers that create trust and security risks. This limits scalability, interoperability, and security guarantees, especially for latency-sensitive applications like gaming and social platforms. Additionally, vendor lock-in with centralized Rollups-as-a-Service providers restricts flexibility and openness.

Lack of decentralized verification for app-specific rollups
Slow finality on Ethereum settlement layer impacting user experience
Centralized sequencers causing trust and censorship risks
